Dugi Rat is the largest settlement on the Adriatic coast between Split and Omiš - it's an administration center. Due to its industry, (Dalmacija Ferroaloys Works) Dugi Rat was considered as one of the most developed towns of Dalmatia up to the 1980s. In the 1990s production in the works slowed down and then stopped completely. Its abandoned buildings spoiled the otherwise wonderful panorama of the Adriatic coast mixed with mountains. It looks like that in March 2010 an agreement about complete sanation of the area has been reached and a brand new resort to be built on the lot might receive vacationers in 2012.
An almost continuous line of beaches starts at `Cape Long` (dugi rat means long cape in Croatia) and goes towards NW, to Split through a couple of almost totally merged settlements:
Orij,
Mali Rat, Jesenice,
, Suhi Potok, Krilo and Podstrana. Beaches here are gravel, smaller gravel or practically sandy. Leaving Dugi Rat in the direction to Omish the neighboring place is Duće - Duće has sandy and rather small gravel beaches, too. As in Croatia and Dalmatia sandy beaches are scarce, Dugi Rat's area is really popular with families and children - this also means that the beaches tend to be overcrowded during the high season.

Accommodation in Dugi Rat is found in either in private apartment buildings or in the camps of neighboring settlements. Hotels are located in Podstrana (5-6 km) and in Omiš (3-4 km). There are both larger groceries (Tommy, Studenac) and smaller shops, bakeries, greengrocers for shopping in Dugi Rat. There is a complete line of restaurants, branch of Splitska banka (bank), post office available locally.
